Lover's Leap – Your journey takes you through the picturesque farmlands of South St. Elizabeth, ascending the Santa Cruz Mountains. Perched on a cliff soaring 1,750 feet above the sea, Lover's Leap beckons. Stand upon a deck extending over the precipice and listen to the captivating tale of how Lover's Leap acquired its evocative name—a story that has inspired more than one novel.
In the 18th century, during the era of colonial Jamaica, there was a slave plantation in the area where Lover's Leap stands today. The estate was owned by a wealthy plantation owner, and his daughter, who was known for her beauty and charm, fell in love with one of the slaves working on the plantation. Their love was forbidden, as it was considered scandalous and socially unacceptable for a plantation owner's daughter to be involved with a slave.
Despite the odds and societal pressures, the young couple's love for each other grew stronger with each passing day. They would often meet in secret, sharing stolen moments of happiness. However, their love story took a tragic turn when their relationship was discovered by the plantation owner.
Faced with the prospect of being forcibly separated and unable to bear the thought of being apart, the young lovers made a fateful decision. They chose to leap from the towering cliff into the churning waters below, hand in hand, rather than live without each other. Their bodies were never recovered.
The cliff from which they leaped came to be known as "Lover's Leap" in memory of their tragic love story. It is said that on moonlit nights, the ghosts of the ill-fated lovers can be seen standing at the edge of the cliff, gazing out to sea, forever united in death.
Lover's Leap has become a symbol of enduring love and a popular tourist attraction in Jamaica, where visitors can stand on a deck built on the cliff's edge, hear the story of the lovers, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. It's a place that not only offers stunning natural beauty but also commemorates a timeless love story that continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of those who hear it.
At Lover's Leap, you'll discover a newly renovated bar and restaurant where you can revel in the boundless vistas and the ever-present sea breeze. While seated on the deck, indulge in cocktails with whimsical names like "Leap With Me!" and "Pedro's Bluff." Alternatively, savor a delectable feast featuring options such as smoked marlin carpaccio, seafood pasta primavera, chicken callaloo blue, or ginger lime fillet of snapper. Complete your dining experience with desserts like the Sweet Passion Tiramisu Trifle. This enchanting locale is perfect for hosting weddings, family reunions, or any special gathering. However, it's important to note, there's no actual leaping involved!
As your tour unfolds, you'll have the opportunity to meander through Treasure Beach, nestled in an area renowned as the "breadbasket" of Jamaica due to its prolific fruit and vegetable cultivation. Along the way, catch a glimpse of a local fishing village, Jakes Hotel, and Jack Sprat Restaurant, adding to the rich tapestry of your journey.
